Dr. Joe Luckey
joined the University of Memphis staff in March of 2002 to oversee
the Center for Athletic Academic Services. Prior to joining the University
of Memphis staff, Dr. Luckey was employed at Austin Peay State University
from 1992 through 2002 serving in various capacities, including Academic
Intern, Athletic Academic Coordinator, and Assistant Athletic Director.
Dr. Luckey has responsibility for supervision of the staff and facility
in the Center for Athletic Academic Services. He is also responsible
for the certification of NCAA eligibility for all student-athletes.
He serves as an instructor for ACAD 1100: Introduction to the
University and as member of various committees on campus. In
addition to these responsibilities on campus, Dr. Luckey is active
in the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A).
Dr. Luckey has served as a faculty member for the leader/manager track
at N4A's Professional Development Institute since it was initiated
in 2005. He assists future leaders to prepare for positions as directors
and assistant directors in athletic academic services throughout the
country. Dr. Luckey is also the chair of the strategic planning committee
and will become a member of the N4A’s executive board in 2009
when he assumes the position of Division Director for Professional
Development.
In 1999, Dr. Luckey was named the recipient of the Lan Hewlett Award
by N4A. This award recognizes an athletic academic counselor who has
demonstrated a sustained professional service in academic advising
and meeting the emerging needs of college student-athletes while garnering
the support of coaches, faculty, and administrators. The award also
recognized efforts to foster the development of future staff in the
career of athletic academic services. While at APSU, he supervised
an intern on an annual basis. Memphis has two graduate assistants
and two academic interns who will receive support and supervision
from Dr. Luckey and the CAAS staff.
In 2005, Dr. Luckey was named the recipient of the Provost's Star
Award by the Academic Affairs Awards Committee at the University of
Memphis. This award recognizes a staff member for outstanding contributions
in achieving the mission of the Division of Academic Affairs.
While not in the office, Dr. Luckey enjoys playing golf with friends
or enjoying time with his family at home. Dr. Luckey and his wife
Melissa have three sons, Adam, Tyler, and Ryan. His favorite food
is Skyline Chili from Cincinnati, Ohio.
